A garage fire in Cottage Grove saw mutual aid over the weekend, even as temperatures dipped below freezing.
Reported at 1:10 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 from the southwest side, the garage fire at a single family home located at 6822 94th Cove in Summer’s Landing saw a mutual aid response from Hastings, Newport, St. Paul Park and Woodbury, as well as M Health EMS and the Cottage Grove Police Department.
The fire was contained dude to good response time and well-trained firefighters, as explained by Cottage Grove Fire Chief John Pritchard.
“We had a fire at single-family home,” Pritchard said. “The fire started in garage. The fire department responded where they found heavy fire involvement coming from the garage. Firefighters acted quickly and contained the fire to the garage. Due to the good response time and well-trained firefighters, the fire was contained to the area it started which is our goal for firefighting. We want to prevent all fires, however when they do occur, our goal is to stop the fire in the area where they start.”
Helping to put out the blaze, frozen hydrants were avoided.
“No, we were pretty fortunate that we didn’t face any issues with frozen hydrants,” Cottage Grove Deputy Fire Chief Peter Fischer shared of cold weather and potential firefighting challenges. An adult male was transported and to the hospital for smoke inhalation from trying to put the fire out prior to department arrival, and in stable condition.
The cause of the Saturday fire remains under investigation the fire starting in the garage.
As for what to do in the event you find yourself in a fire situation, the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office shares tips on getting out safely with those you love:
• Designate a safe meeting place outside your home everyone can get to after a fire. Make sure everyone in your family understands where to go.
• Use graph paper to draw a floor plan of your home and show two ways out of each room.
• Make sure each family member is aware of two ways out of each room.
• Practice your family escape plan twice each year.
• Practice at different times of the day to make sure people know what to do during nighttime hours.
• Walk through your home periodically and inspect all exits and escape routes.
